Two charged over Rhys killing

Two people have been charged in connection with the murder of schoolboy Rhys Jones, Merseyside Police said.

James Hughes, 22, of Willow Way, Croxteth, Liverpool, and 48-year-old Janette Marie Mercer, also from Croxteth, have been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Merseyside Police also said that Francis Yates, 48, and Marie Yates, 50, both of Dodman Road, Croxteth, have been summoned for the offence of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

All four will appear at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on June 17.

Rhys, 11, was shot dead in August last year as he walked home from football practice.

He died in his mother Melanie's arms in the car park of the Fir Tree pub in Croxteth.

A 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with murder in April and has already been committed to Liverpool Crown Court for trial along with six others.

James Yates, 20, of Dodman Road, Croxteth, Gary Kays, 25, of Mallard Close, and Melvin Coy, 24, of Abbeyfield Drive, both West Derby, Liverpool, as well as a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old who cannot be identified, are all charged with assisting an offender.

A second 16-year-old is charged with assisting an offender and possessing a firearm and ammunition.

All seven have been remanded in custody to appear for a plea and case management hearing on July 24.
