An investigation was under way into the sequence of events which saw the single-decker full of youngsters from a marching band crash into the car then smash through a hedge and into a paddock before hitting a camper van parked on private property.
The coach, on its way to an event at Filey, North Yorkshire, narrowly missed a house.
The accident occurred on the A64 at Staxton Hill outside Scarborough at around 9am.
Police are looking into the possibility that the coach's brakes failed on the one-in-four gradient.
A man and a woman in a grey VW Passat died at the scene. The identities of the couple, who are from South Yorkshire, will not be released until relatives have been informed.
The coach driver was one of the four taken to hospital.
The coach was carrying around 55 passengers, a mixture of children and adults, from a West Midlands-based marching band.
They were heading to a competition at the Primrose Valley holiday village in Filey.
Six passengers on board were hurt, and four needed treatment at the Scarborough District Hospital. No-one was in the camper van at the time, which was parked up.
