Two held over restaurant shooting

Two men have been arrested over a shooting at a city centre restaurant.

The men, aged 25 and 40, were held on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence after shots were fired at Lazeez, in Birmingham's Mailbox on Friday night.

No-one was hurt in the incident but the gunfire saw diners evacuate the upmarket Asian restaurant.

Police were called to the restaurant at about 9.45pm.

"At this stage it is believed that a number of shots were discharged at the premises," said a West Midlands Police spokeswoman.

On Saturday, a police cordon surrounded the restaurant as a forensic examination of the scene continued.

Speaking at the scene on Saturday, Birmingham city centre commander Chief Superintendent Malcolm Coall said the shooting was "not random" but involved a group of between 10-15 people in a private meeting at the restaurant.

He said: "I have spoken to investigators and our initial assessment is that this appears to have been contained within the premises between people who seem to know each other.

"We would appeal to those people to come forward."

He said it was too early to ascertain how many shots were fired at the restaurant.
