Two men charged under Terrorism Act

Two men have been charged under the Terrorism Act with providing support to a "proscribed organisation".

Arunachalam Chrishanthakumar, also known as AC Shanthan, 50, of Upwood Road, Norbury, and 29-year-old Goldan Lambert, of Bramley Hill, south Croydon, are accused of giving support to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The pair will appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, police said.

Scotland Yard said that Chrishanthakumar was charged with five counts under the Terrorism Act 2000.

It is alleged that between June 1 2006 and July 26 2006, within the Greater London area, he helped to arrange a meeting he knew was "to support a proscribed organisation, namely the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam".

Chrishanthakumar is also accused of addressing a meeting in a public place on July 25 last year - London's Hyde Park - to encourage support for the group.

He is also accused, on or about January 24 2005 of receiving £1,500, intending that it be used or having reasonable cause to suspect that it may be used for terrorism purposes.

Chrishanthakumar has also been charged with receiving literature and manuals intending that they be used or having reasonable cause to suspect that they may be used for the purposes of terrorism.

They include underwater warfare systems, explosive ordnance disposal and Naval weapons systems, six trenching spades, 39 compasses and a piece of ballistic body armour. It is alleged he received them within the Greater London area between January 17 2006 and June 22 this year.

The fifth charge is that between January 23 2005 and June 22 this year, Chrishanthakumar belonged or professed to belong to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Lambert faces one charge - that on July 25 last year at Hyde Park he helped in managing a meeting which he knew was to support the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, contrary to the Terrorism Act 2000.
