Two million toys pulled over safety
15 January 2007
Some 49,000 of those are Chinese-made toy cars which may contain excessive levels of lead paint.
Mattel is pulling another 1.9 million Polly Pocket, Batman, Barbie and other magnetic toys sold in the UK and Ireland because the magnets may come loose.
The recall announcement came less than a fortnight after Mattel pulled 94,000 Fisher-Price toys from the UK and Ireland amid concerns about lead in the paint.
The die-cast toy Cars character Sarge is being recalled following Mattel's ongoing investigation into paint used on Fisher-Price toys by a Chinese firm.
Sarge toys made between May and July 2007 were found to have "impermissible levels of lead", Mattel said.
The firm is recalling 436,000 of the toy cars globally, of which 253,000 are in the US and 49,000 are in the UK and Ireland.
Mattel has introduced a new checking system in the wake of problems with paint used by Chinese firm Hong Li Da Plastic Cement Products Facility (HLD). In addition, the firm is pulling 18.2 million magnetic toys globally because of fears the magnets may come off.
In total, the magnet-related recall affects 69 different products across the Polly Pocket, Doggie Day Care, Batman and Barbie brands. All of the recalled products were made between January 2002 and January 31, 2007,
Customers in the UK and Ireland should contact Mattel's helpline on 01628 500 303 or email HelplineUK@mattel.com or visit the company's UK website at www.service.mattel.com/uk/.
