UK cleared over rendition flights

An inquiry has found no evidence that CIA torture flights landed on British soil.

The 18-month inquiry examined claims by human rights group Liberty that "extraordinary rendition" flights landed in the the UK.

Greater Manchester Police chief constable Michael Todd agreed to probe the allegations on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo).

It was claimed CIA flights have flown into the country more than 210 times since 2001.

The aircraft were alleged to have been carrying terror detainees to other countries where they may have faced torture.

An Acpo spokeswoman said "no evidence had been found to support the claims".

The announcement appears to contradict the conclusions of a report published by human rights watchdog the Council of Europe.

This report claims the US and its Nato allies reached a secret agreement allowing the CIA to hold high value detainees in Europe.

Acpo agreed to investigate whether UK law had been breached by CIA agents using UK airports by US Government chartered flights.
