UK oil worker kidnapped in Nigeria

The foreign office is investigating reports that a Briton is one of four foreign oil workers kidnapped in Nigeria.

A group of gunmen, allegedly dressed in police uniforms, invaded the workers' compound in Port Harcourt early on Saturday morning and kidnapped them without firing a shot, Rivers State Police Commissioner Felix Ogbaudu said.

The abduction took place at the compound of oil-services firm Schlumberger Ltd.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We've seen wire reports that a number of foreign nationals have been kidnapped in the early hours of Saturday 2 June.

"We cannot speculate at this stage on nationalities but our consular staff in Nigeria are urgently checking."

No-one from Schlumberger Ltd. in Port Harcourt was available to comment today.

The kidnapped are also reported to include one Dutch, one Pakistani and another person whose nationality is unknown.

In the past two weeks local media in Port Harcourt has reported more than 10 kidnappings of foreign oil company workers.

More than 100 foreigners have been taken in the last six months and around 30 are being held for ransom in the Niger Delta.
