UK 'should share immigrants data'

Britain should share information about some immigrants and travellers with the United States for the first time, Home Secretary John Reid is due to say.

He will urge senior figures in the US government to swap data on failed asylum seekers, other immigration offenders and people caught using false documents.

In return, Britain would give the US access to its files on immigration offenders and other "travellers of interest", Mr Reid will say.

It would be the first time the UK has shared such information with American authorities, although some details are currently swapped with EU countries.

Mr Reid will propose the step during a meeting with US Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff in Washington this week.

"Every issue we face, whether it involves immigration, identity or counter-terrorism, has international relationships at its very core," Mr Reid will say.

"That is why today's international strategy is crucial to our future.

"We cannot protect Britain's borders by operating in a bubble.

"The only way to tackle these 21st century issues is through countries working together."

"Today we are undertaking to improve that co-operation through better exchange of immigration data and working together to tackle the reasons for migration."
