UK woman dies in Guyana cliff fall

A British teenager volunteering as a science teacher in Guyana died after falling from a cliff during a hike.

Pamela McCarroll, 18, died when she slipped and tumbled from a precipice in a south-western Amazon district of the South American country, police said.

Miss McCarroll, from Beith, Ayrshire, had been in Guyana since last September to teach science to an indigenous community through Scottish non-profit organisation Project Trust, which sends teenage volunteers to do social work abroad.

She was walking with a friend when she slipped and fell down the cliff, Project Trust said.

"Pamela was an admirable teacher, very conscientious and hard working," the organisation said in a statement.
