Unidentified wasteland body 'male'

A body found on wasteland in a village close to a busy motorway was male, police have revealed.

The body was discovered in East Cowick, East Yorkshire, on Wednesday evening by a member of the public walking his dog and is believed to have been there for some time.

Speaking at the scene, Detective Chief Inspector Christine Kelk said police were treating the death of suspicious but had no further details about the identity of the victim.

Ms Kelk, of Humberside Police, said: "The victim appears to be male and would appear to have been there for some time."

She said she did not know how old the person was but confirmed that it was not the body of a small child.

Ms Kelk said police were investigating whether the body had been dumped in the isolated lane off the A614 trunk road.

She added that police could not rule out the possibility that the victim had died from natural causes but said it was "highly unlikely".

Ms Kelk said identifying the victim was the priority in the investigation at the moment but added that this could take weeks.

She asked for anyone who remembered anything suspicious in the area to contact police.

The scene, near the M62 and 100 metres from the Aire and Calder Navigation canal, remains cordoned.
