Union urges Rock staff protection

The Government has been urged to take "strong steps" to make sure Northern Rock workers do not suffer as a result of the decision to take the bank into public ownership.

Unite called for guarantees about future employment to make sure there were no compulsory redundancies, and decent payments for voluntary lay-offs.

The restructuring plans must consider the economic impact for the North East, said Unite.

Deputy general secretary Graham Goddard said: "Unite is demanding that the government give clarification on the long-term job security, terms and conditions and pension protection for staff.

"Unite wants a commitment to no compulsory redundancies and in case of any voluntary redundancies for workers to be compensated at the same level as our European counterparts.

"We will now be insisting that the government ensure their intervention means that taxpayers money is spent in a responsible manner to ensure positive social and economic outcomes. Throughout this crisis the workforce has been committed to the future of the company and they deserve recognition of this.

"Unite will be pressing for business solutions that are in the best interests of the employees and the company's future. We will oppose any attempt to asset strip Northern Rock. It is vital for the North East that the plans for public ownership take into account the implications for the region."

Unite officials will today meet MPs from across the North East to raise employee concerns on the implications for them of the bank's nationalisation.
