University applications 'solid'

The vast majority of universities are now charging the maximum fee of around £3,000.
But there has remained an upward trend in the number of people applying to attend university, the Universities UK report found.
The study examines the full impact of the top-up tuition fees, which came into force in September 2006.
It found that number of applicants to university increased by six percent in 2007 from 2006 and by 12% from 2004. It follows a blip in 2006, the first year of the new fee, when applications fell by 3.4% on 2005.
Under the new system, undergraduates are charged up to £3,000 a year, but do not have to pay until after they graduate.
The report concluded: "Overall there is nothing in the available data to suggest that the introduction of variable fees in England has had any lasting impact on the level or pattern of demand for full-time undergraduate education."
It added that data on applicants continues to show "a very high degree of stability in the ethnicity of applicants and acceptances, the social class mix and the age distribution."
There has also been a 6.8% increase in part-time undergraduate enrolments between 2003/04 and 2006/07.
The report concluded that as yet, there is no indication of changes in the demand for part-time courses, despite the decision of many universities to increase part-time undergraduate fees.
