Unveiling of Wembley statue

A statue of World Cup hero Bobby Moore is being unveiled at the new Wembley stadium at a ceremony attended by Tony Blair and the football legend's widow.

The twice life-size bronze model of the former England and West Ham captain has been positioned so it can gaze down Olympic Way at arriving fans.

The sculpture of Moore, who died of cancer in 1993 at the age of 51, has been created by artist Philip Jackson.

Stephanie, the widow of England's 1966 World Cup winning hero, will also be joined by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell at the ceremony in north-west London.

When she saw a clay model of her late husband - the first stage of the sculpture process - she said: "Philip has done an incredible job of capturing Bobby, both in terms of his qualities as a player and his physical appearance.

"I am delighted that Bobby's career is being recognised in such an appropriate way and in such a perfect place as Wembley. He belongs to football and to the fans."

The finished artwork weighs about two tons and stands 6m high on its plinth.
