Victim 'gave vital evidence'

One of five murdered prostitutes may have given evidence to police which undermines the case against a man accused of the killings, a court was told.

A barrister representing defendant Steve Wright said Paula Clennell had given "vital evidence" which may prove that one of the women had been killed by someone else.

Wright, 49, of Ipswich, Suffolk, denies murdering Miss Clennell, 24, Tania Nicol, 19, Gemma Adams, 25, Anneli Alderton, 24, and Annette Nicholls, 29.

The naked remains of the five women, who all worked as prostitutes in Ipswich, were found in isolated locations near the town between December 2 and December 12 2006.

Timothy Langden, QC, who leads Wright's legal team, was addressing jurors at Ipswich Crown Court following a month-long trial.

During the trial jurors were told that Miss Clennell had been questioned following Miss Nicol's disappearance in late October.

Prosecutors suggest that Wright killed Miss Nicol after picking her up at around 11pm on October 30.

But Miss Clennell told police in a statement that she saw Miss Nicol talking to the occupant of a car which did not match Wright's in the early hours of October 31.

"It is plainly, we suggest, vital evidence," said Mr Langden.

"If it is so it means that Steve Wright did not kill Tania Nicol. Somebody else did, after she left his car."
