Victim's dog helps police hunt

Detectives investigating the murder of a loner whose dog lay by his body for up to three days have drafted in the victim's pet to help catch his killer.

John Devine, 45, was found dead in bushes in Glasgow's Cowlairs Park on July 16.

His loyal dog Chico had stayed with him for up to 72 hours before returning home and being taken in by a neighbour.

The alarm was raised when a member of the public noticed the Staffordshire bull terrier cross was no longer in the park and went to see what had been holding its attention.

Six weeks on, police are stepping up their appeal for information on the killing.

Chico will return to the park along with Mr Devine's father, also John, in a bid to jog people's memories.

The murder victim, who was also known as Jake, was seen entering Cowlairs Park at 8.30pm on July 10. Officers said it is not known whether Mr Devine, of Gadshill Street, Royston, was killed that night or on a later date.

Detective Chief Inspector Ricky Mason, who is leading the inquiry, said: "Jake was a bit of a loner but was always with his dog and that is what people may remember about him.

"Taking Chico back to the scene may prompt the memories of the local community or passers-by who perhaps saw him either with Jake or alone at the park.

"Mr Devine has agreed to attend with Chico. I realise that this will be upsetting and emotional for him and fully appreciate his co-operation in assisting us."
