Vigil marks BBC hostage's 100th day

A worldwide vigil is to be held for kidnapped Gaza correspondent Alan Johnston on the 100th day of his captivity.

Events are taking place across the globe to mark 100 days since the British journalist was captured in Gaza City.

His parents will be joined by villagers at their home in Lochgoilhead, Argyll, where they will release 100 balloons.

Mr Johnston's colleagues across the BBC will also pause for a moment in their work to show their support.

Staff will be holding posters and wearing T-shirts with messages calling for his release. News 24 and BBC World will carry the events live.

Director of BBC News Helen Boaden said: "On the 100th day we are more steadfast in our support for Alan than ever and our thoughts are always with his family."

Mr Johnston, who spent his 45th birthday in captivity, has not been seen since he was seized at gunpoint on his way home from his office in Gaza City on March 12 this year. It is understood he was taken by a group calling itself The Army of Islam.

Intensive international efforts have been continuing to secure his release.

A total of 170,000 people have signed a petition on the BBC website calling for the reporter's release.

BBC colleagues from Washington, New York, Brussels, Jerusalem and Kabul in Afghanistan, along with members of the EastEnders cast and crew on the Albert Square set, as well as the BBC crew at the Glastonbury Festival will all mark the occasion.
