Vigilance urged over foot-and-mouth

The Government's chief veterinary officer has called for "relentless vigilance" in the ongoing battle to stamp out foot-and-mouth disease.

Debby Reynolds asked animal owners in the protection and surveillance zones surrounding the affected area to notify Animal Health officials of any movements of animals off their premises since July 16.

A 3km protection zone, ringed by a 10km surveillance zone, was imposed around fields at Normandy, Surrey, where two farmers' herds were found to be infected.

Another temporary 3km zone, imposed last Friday around a farm at Wotton near Dorking, was lifted after tests on cattle there came back negative.

With the disease appearing now to be contained, Dr Reynolds urged against complacency to ensure farming returned swiftly back to normal.

She said: "As a precautionary measure to supplement our extensive tracings operation, we are asking keepers to report these movements today if they haven't already.

"In addition, we have been doing extensive work to contact keepers in the protection and surveillance zones.

"However it is possible that there may be a few keepers who have not yet been contacted by Animal Health. We urge keepers to whom this may apply to make themselves known to us."

She emphasised the continuing need for "relentless vigilance, strict biosecurity, and early reporting of disease".

Dr Reynolds, speaking to BBC News 24, added: "It is a crucial week for a combination of vigilance and planning ahead. Vigilance for those people who keep animals looking for early signs of infection just in case there is some foot-and-mouth disease virus still there, but also planning ahead with a real sense of urgency."
