Violence blights carnival's end

Violence marred the end of the Notting Hill Carnival after one man was stabbed and a teenager suffered a suspected gunshot wound.

Police found the 17-year-old youth bleeding from his shoulder after hearing shots fired near Blenheim Crescent in Notting Hill at around 7.30pm on Monday, Scotland Yard said. An arrest has been made in connection with the incident, police said.

Earlier, at around 6.15pm, a man in his 20s was stabbed in Westbourne Park Road. Neither injury is believed to be life-threatening, police said.

Carnival-goers descended on the streets of west London in droves to soak up the bank holiday sun and enjoy the festivities. According to police estimates, as of 6pm on Monday, some 600,000 people had attended the day's festivities.

Organisers rejected suggestions that this year's celebration had not been as well attended as previous years and insisted some 1.5 million people had flocked to Notting Hill over the three days - roughly the same amount as last year.

A spokesman said: "We normally feel that the police figures are conservative.

"We believe that there were about half a million people (on Sunday) and the total over the three days would be about 1.5 million, the same figure as last year."

Carnival director Michael Williams said: "I found it just as congested. I am extremely happy as you rewind a few days and you remember the predictions of mayhem on the streets. What we had was a well-run carnival and people enjoying themselves."

The carnival did appear to get off to a slower start than usual, with the streets far from packed by lunchtime. But those who had made the journey were making the most of the day.

Police - many wearing earplugs - could also be seen on every corner, some happily posing for photographs with costumed festival-goers. As of 9.25pm, the number of arrests on Monday stood at 130, Scotland Yard said. There had been 160 allegations of crime, making a running total for the weekend of 270.
