Voters 'back BBC' on BNP invitation

Most voters think the BBC was right to invite the far-right British National Party leader Nick Griffin to appear on its Question Time programme, a poll shows.

His inclusion, which the BBC says is based on obligations resulting from the party's success in winning two seats in European Parliament elections this year, has sparked fierce controversy.

Anti-fascist campaigners plan to stage a protest against Mr Griffin's presence on the show at the BBC's Television Centre in west London when it is filmed on Thursday.

But the YouGov survey for the Sunday Times found the public backed the invitation by 63% to 23%.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw will engage the BNP leader in the televised debate after Labour reviewed its long-standing approach of refusing to share a platform with the party.

Black writer Bonnie Greer will also take part as well as Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Chris Huhne.

YouGov interviewed a representative sample of 2,025 voters, across Britain, online, on October 15-16.
