Voters' call to scrap Lisbon Treaty

More than half of voters believe Britain should drop the EU's Lisbon Treaty in the wake of its rejection by Irish voters in a referendum last week, according to a new poll.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown insists that he will press ahead with the parliamentary ratification of the Treaty by completing the passage of the EU (Amendment) Bill through the House of Lords on Wednesday and securing Royal Assent by the end of the week.

But the poll suggests that his approach is backed by just 14% of voters, against 54% who said that the Government should drop the treaty and not try to ratify it.

Labour voters were 46% to 19% against continuing ratification of the Treaty.

The YouGov survey of 1,000 voters for eurosceptic thinktank OpenEurope also found that just 29% of those questioned believe Britain should remain a full member of the EU, against 38% who think it should stay in the single market, but withdraw from other political elements of the Union and 24% who say it should leave.

OpenEurope director Neil O'Brien said: "Pressing ahead as if nothing has happened looks all wrong. Most of his own voters think that Gordon Brown should now drop the Lisbon Treaty and not try to ratify it."
