Voters see Brown as arrogant - poll

Prime Minister-in-waiting Gordon Brown is seen as more arrogant and less in touch with voters then Tony Blair and Conservative leader David Cameron, according to a Newsnight poll.

The Chancellor is expected to become the next premier, but appears to have an image problem with some of the electorate, the poll commissioned by the BBC current affairs programme suggests.

Of the 1,001 people questioned at the end of April, 30% thought Mr Brown was in touch with ordinary people, but Mr Blair was rated higher (34%) while the Tory leader received 40% of the vote.

Asked to say whether he was trustworthy, less than a third replied yes for Mr Brown (31%) compared with 38% for Mr Cameron and 41% for Liberal Democrat leader Ming Campbell.

Two thirds of those interviewed (64%) felt the Prime Minister was too concerned with public relations and spin, followed by Mr Cameron (55%) and Mr Brown (46%).

More than half of those questioned thought the Chancellor was tough (59%) and has firm principles (54%). This was more than the third (34%) who felt the Tory leader was strong.
