We speak for Britain, says Cameron

Conservative leader David Cameron said that his party had enjoyed "a great set of results" in Thursday's elections.

The Tories claimed "stunning" successes in South Ribble and East Yorkshire and won council seats across the North.

They are now "the one national party speaking up for Britain", said Mr Cameron.

Speaking outside his London home, Mr Cameron said the results gave his party plenty to build on but notably stopped short of making predictions of victory in the next general election.

Mr Cameron said: "We have taken control of councils right up and down the country.

"We took control of South Ribble with stunning results on one side of the Pennines. We took control of the East Riding of Yorkshire on the other side, also with stunning results.

"Winning councillors in Sunderland, Bolton, Bury, Wigan and Salford, right across the North of England.

"A very good set of results, we are the one national party speaking up for Britain.

"And down in the South West, taking Torbay.

"A great set of results and I think we can really build on them and really go forward, and I think that's exciting.

"The Conservative Party is really where it should be at the moment and I am very pleased about that."
