Wheels give police dog Max power

A retired police drug sniffer dog regularly patrols his new rural beat with his own "off road" wheels supporting his unstable hips.

English Springer spaniel Max is a regular sight in the fields and lanes around his home near Cullompton, east Devon - his two-wheeled harness giving him a new lease of life.

His owner is Devon and Cornwall police inspector Anne Higgins, who said specialist drugs dog Max had to retire early because of inherited hip displasia which made him "wobble".

She said Max, a drugs dog for six years also suffered from arthritis, and was put on the retired list by the adjacent Avon and Somerset police.

"He was advertised by the Avon and Somerset force as looking for a home, and we were selected after being vetted," she said.

"We had him for a year before we started to look for something for his hip displasia - eventually he could only walk for about 50 yards before dropping.

"It got to the stage where he would not exercise because he could not keep his balance, so we got the wheels made bespoke from a specialist UK firm," she said.

"He absolutely loves them because he associated them with giving him his freedom, and because he has always worked he sees pulling the wheels along as his job."

And Max is in line for a new career as a "therapy dog" - going along to homes for the elderly and meeting the clients.

Two police dogs from the Avon and Somerset force raised cash for the wheels by going with their handler on a three-peaks challenge.
