Wife prays for kidnapped journalist

The wife of a British journalist kidnapped by gunmen in Iraq has said that she was "praying" for his safety.

The missing man is one of two employees of US television network CBS who were seized on Sunday near their hotel in the centre of Basra.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said they were "urgently" looking in to reports of the kidnapping which first surfaced in an Iraqi news agency on Monday.

Aswat al-Iraq (Voice of Iraq) quoted an unnamed police source as saying that a British journalist and his interpreter were seized by armed men near their hotel, the Qasr al-Sultan, in the centre of the southern city.

CBS News has since confirmed that two of their employees were unaccounted for. A spokeswoman said: "Two journalists working for CBS News in Basra are missing. All efforts are under way to find them and until we learn more details, CBS News requests that others do not speculate on the identities of those involved. CBS News has been in touch with the families and asks that their privacy be respected."

The kidnapped man is a photojournalist with experience of covering conflicts around the world. He was one of only a few freelance photographers in Baghdad to record its fall in early 2003.

He has worked for publications including The Sunday Telegraph, The New York Times and The Financial Times.

His wife said: "It is still early days. We are just praying for him to be safe."
