Wii's new hit at children's parties

Traditional children's pastimes such as musical chairs and pass the parcel have been ousted as Britain's favourite party activities by games consoles, according to new research.

The study, which canvassed the views of almost 4,000 adults, found the Nintendo Wii and DS, and the Sony Playstation, were now among the top four activities at children's parties.

Commissioned by frozen food firm Birds Eye, the YouGov poll revealed that today's youngsters enjoy a very different selection of party games than their parents did.

More than two-thirds of the adults questioned (67%) said pass the parcel was one of their favourite party games when they were children, while 61% were fond of musical chairs.

In contrast, under a third (31%) of parents of children aged four to 12 say pass the parcel is a favourite of their children and only 19% of youngsters like musical chairs nowadays.

The study, conducted to mark the relaunch of Birds Eye's 80s staple Supermousse, found that 41% of children now opt to play Wii and Nintendo DS (31%) at a party, whereas only 12% of parents surveyed played games consoles at celebrations when they were young.

And, despite the popularity of retro fashions, hide-and-seek and pin the tail on the donkey have also fallen down the current party game pecking order - with only 11% playing the game.
