William ready for next career phase

Prince William is set to embark on the next stage of his military career after completing specialised training.

The second-in-line to the throne is now a fully fledged armoured reconnaissance troop leader in the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals, like his brother Prince Harry, after almost five months of instruction.

The 25-year-old Prince, who will one day be head of the Armed Forces, is equipped with the skills to lead a troop of 11 soldiers and four Scimitar reconnaissance vehicles.

But, like Harry, it is not known whether he will serve abroad in a conflict zone. William's brother was gearing up for a tour of duty in Iraq with his regiment but it was announced in May he would not be deployed following "specific threats" against him.

Royal aides are unlikely to want an heir to the throne seeing action on the front line. But William has insisted he wants to fight for his country.

"The last thing I want to do is be mollycoddled or wrapped up in cotton wool because if I was to join the Army I'd want to go where my men went and I'd want to do what they did," he once said.

William has had an eventful time away from training at Bovington Camp in Dorset which saw him instructed in signals, driving and maintenance, as well as in general gunnery.

He is now expected to join his regiment at Combermere Barracks in Windsor and move onto the next phase of his military career.

After about a year with his unit, William will spend time with both the RAF and the Royal Navy on "familiarisation attachments". He will, at this point, carry out public engagements in parallel to his military career and they will become more frequent as he approaches the end of his service.

The Prince of Wales trained to be a pilot with the RAF, getting his wings in 1971. Charles also signed up to the Royal Navy and was given command of his own ship, the minehunter HMS Bronington.
