William receives his RAF wings

Prince William has received his RAF wings from his proud father the Prince of Wales after completing an intensive flying course.

The young royal was joined at the ceremony by girlfriend Kate Middleton who made her first appearance at an official engagement for more than two years.

The couple were pictured walking together after the ceremony, held at the RAF'S spiritual home, RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire.

The move will fuel speculation that William, 25 and Kate, 26, who rekindled their romance a few months after splitting last April, are permanently back together and could be heading towards marriage.

William earned his wings after more than 12 weeks training with the RAF - a feat which saw the Prince became the fourth successive generation of the monarchy to become an RAF pilot.

Asked if he enjoyed his time at RAF Cranwell, during a photocall with the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, he replied, smiling, "Yes thanks, brilliant."

He has followed in the footsteps of his father, Charles, and grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh, who both earned the RAF flying badge.

The Prince's great-grandfather Prince Albert, later King George VI, was the first royal to serve in the RAF, between 1918 and 1919.

Wing Commander Andy Lovell who helped to train William and carried out his final test that earned him his wings praised the royal's flying skills.

He said: "William was very good. I was very impressed by his flying skills. He had a natural handling ability and he was very quick to learn. He responded well to instructions and demonstrated plenty of spare capacity."
