William 'to join Navy drug patrols'

Prince William will be joining Royal Navy vessels patrolling the Caribbean in search of drug runners, it was reported.

It was announced last year that the young royal would be joining the Navy on attachment in the summer.

However, the Ministry of Defence refused to confirm the report on the Daily Mirror website that he was being sent to the Caribbean.

British ships are routinely sent to the region to help with security as part of their duties.

William, 25, has just completed a four-month period with the RAF and will move onto the Navy as part of a familiarisation programme as the prince will one day be head of the armed forces.

Drug running is an increasing problem in the waters around some of the Caribbean islands like Trinidad and Tobago, which are stop off points for South American narcotics before they are shipped to America and Europe.

Navy vessels patrol the region and amongst their duties they assist American led operations tackling drug shipments.

More than 3.5 tonnes of drugs was seized by Royal Navy vessels last year but in 2006 19.4 tonnes was taken.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "We don't routinely comment on the details of future operation employment of our units or our serving personnel.

"A programme for Prince William's time with the Royal Navy is currently being developed and once this is complete we will make an announcement."
