Winds continue to batter Britain

More blustery weather was rolling in following a stormy weekend which left one woman dead.

Forecasters predicted strong winds and rain for the coming week as more low pressure moved in from the West.

The weekend saw downpours and severe gusts that reached more than 100mph in parts of the UK, toppling trees and cutting off power lines.

A woman in her 30s was killed when a falling tree struck her car in Co Down, Northern Ireland, on Saturday.

A cargo ship lost 1,500 metric tonnes of timber as it negotiated rough seas in the English Channel.

A spokesman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) said that the Russian-registered Sinegorsk reported on Monday morning that it had lost the wood around 14 miles off the coast of Newhaven, East Sussex.

The ship had been bound for Alexandria, Egypt, but was now heading towards Portsmouth as it was listing 15 degrees to one side.

Forecaster Rob Hutchinson, of MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said there was more bad weather to come, with rain expected to turn to sleet and snow in some places.

He explained that the wild weather was down to a powerful jet stream coming in from the Atlantic which was causing low pressure to develop.

The gusty weather is expected to be at its worst from Wednesday night to Thursday morning, with more high winds predicted for the end of the week. Mr Hutchinson added: "This week will be very unsettled and the wind will make it feel quite cold."
