Woman detained after child deaths

A woman arrested in connection with the deaths of two young children has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Police found the bodies of a girl less than six months old and a boy aged under six years after they arrested the 25-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man in Thornton Heath, south London.

The man has been released on bail to return to a south London police station in June.

Child abuse investigators are leading the inquiry into the deaths. Post-mortem examinations are to be be carried out, a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said.

The two adults were arrested after a bus driver called police to an incident involving them and a young child in the Brigstock Road area of Thornton Heath.

The child, a three-year-old girl, was taken to hospital with several undisclosed injuries and remains in a south London hospital in a stable condition.

After making the arrests, officers rushed to a house in nearby Melfort Road where they found the dead children.

Superintendent Chris Bourlet of Croydon Police said that officers rushed to the Melfort Road address "as a result of inquiries" they made during the arrests.

He said: "Clearly this is a tragic set of circumstances. We are doing our best to investigate what has happened here."

He said police were treating the deaths as a "suspicious incident".
