Woman dies after boat capsizes
27 January 2007
The woman and her husband were believed to be on holiday, visiting a friend on the Isles of Scilly, off the Cornish coast.
They were enjoying the sunny weather on board the 16ft vessel when it capsized at around 4pm on Sunday.
A local boat called for help and others in the area went to the rescue.
One of them plucked the couple, in their 70s, and their friend, in his 80s, from the sea but the woman was already dead, Falmouth Coastguards said.
Her husband and their friend, believed to be from the Isles of Scilly, were taken ashore and airlifted by a Royal Navy helicopter to Treliske Hospital in Truro, Cornwall.
Devon and Cornwall Police said the sea was rough at the time but Ian Guy, watch officer at Falmouth Coastguard, said: "The winds had been reasonably light. The tides can have an effect as well as the wind. There weren't strong weather warnings in force."
He added: "One of the local boats saw the small motor boat had capsized and the three people were in the water between St Agnes and St Mary's islands.
"They alerted us and went to assist along with other local boats."
The RNLI lifeboat was also sent out to help with the rescue as well as the Royal Navy helicopter from Culdrose, he said.
