Woman dies, man hurt in sea rescue

A woman has died and a man is in hospital after a couple were rescued from the sea.

The pair were pulled from the water at the Promenade in Blackpool, Lancs in the early hours of this morning.

It is not known how or why the couple, believed to be from the Manchester area, were in the water, and a police investigation is underway.

Police officers were first called at 2.50am after receiving reports somebody was in the sea opposite the Cenotaph on the sea front.

A man was rescued from the water but suffered a serious head injury, police think possibly as he was crashed against the sea wall by waves.

As officers were dealing with the rescue they were informed a woman was also in the water.

A lifeboat and police helicopter were scrambled and the body of the young woman was pulled aboard the boat a short time later.

Paramedics gave her emergency treatment and she was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, but doctors could not save her life and she was pronounced dead shortly after 6am.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police added: "At this point in time we are not able to give personal details about the couple or the circumstances of how they got into the water.

"It is not clear what has gone on. An investigation is underway."
