Woman killed by car fleeing police

A woman was killed and four people were taken to hospital after a car was involved in a collision with a Mercedes which was fleeing police.

An unmarked police car wanted to stop the black Mercedes as it drove along Bethnal Green Road, in Shoreditch, east London, at 3.45am on Sunday so switched on its blue lights, Scotland Yard said.

The Mercedes then drove away at speed and was involved in a crash with a blue Vauxhall Corsa.

A woman, aged in her 30s, who was travelling in the Corsa was pronounced dead at the scene at 4.30am.

Police said earlier that London Ambulance Service took a man and a girl who were also in the car to an east London hospital.

The occupants of the black Mercedes left the scene of the crash.

Two people were arrested in connection with this incident shortly afterwards, police said.

An ambulance spokeswoman later said that a total of four people had been taken to hospital.

She described the man's condition as "life-threatening" with a serious head injury.

The spokeswoman said a child, believed to be aged around two years, was also taken to the hospital "as a precaution".
