It happened shortly after 4pm local time at a small beach at Playa de los Gigantes.

The area is popular with British tourists and it was reported that the woman, who has not been named, was on holiday with her family.

The collapse of a 130ft stretch of cliff on to the beach killed another person and may have buried another two on the popular holiday island, a Spanish Interior Ministry spokesman said.

Diane Morris, who works at the nearby Bamboo Bar, said emergency workers were still at the scene.

She said: "There has been a lot of activity today with helicopters and there are still ambulances and fire engines down there.

"There has been a lot of speculation about it. Originally people said one person had died but now they are saying more.

"It is a little beach, more like a cove really, but its all taped off now."
