Magda Pniewska, 26, a Polish national who had lived in the UK for three years, is believed to have been hit by a stray bullet as she left work.
Police said she was hit in the head when two gunmen opened fire at each other in New Cross, south east London.
Police are investigating whether the shoot-out was linked to drug dealing in the area of John Williams Close, New Cross, south London.
The victim, who was wounded in the head, was found by police lying outside a house at about 6.20pm on Tuesday night.
She was taken by ambulance to King's College Hospital where she was pronounced dead just over an hour later.
One witness told the Evening Standard the two gunmen were standing just yards apart as they exchanged up to five shots.
Describing how one man arrived on the scene, she said: "He pulled out a handgun from his trousers and fired two or three shots at the car. The other guy then got out a similar gun from his pants and shot back using the bonnet for cover.
"There were about five shots in total. There was no shouting, nothing, just the shots. This woman came from nowhere."
The shooting is the latest grim milestone in London's growing gun and gang violence crisis.
