Joyce Cregeen, 81, was found stabbed to death in her home in Sefton Road, Epsom, Surrey, on May 15.
The woman detained was taken to Guildford police station for questioning, Surrey Police said.
Mrs Cregeen, a retired police administrator and mother of one, lived alone following the death of her husband, Arthur, in 1997.
She had lots of visitors and, although she was relatively active for her age, she chose to stay at home most of the time, neighbours said.
Dorothy Winter, who lives in Sefton Road, said: "This is absolutely terrible. Everybody around here is really frightened. You just don't expect this to happen, especially to a lady of Joyce's age."
Det Chief Insp Jo Sidaway, leading the inquiry, appealed for local residents' help last week, saying: "Whoever is responsible for this vicious killing of an elderly woman deserves absolutely no protection."
