Lance Corporal Ivano Violino, from 20 Field Squadron, 36 Engineer Regiment, died after an Army dump truck he was commanding was hit by an explosion in Helmand Province.
He was part of a routine logistic convoy moving vital engineer equipment to a forward operating base, nearly 12 miles north-east of the town of Gereshk, when it was hit by an explosion at around 3.30pm local time on Monday. Another soldier was also wounded in the attack but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
L/Cpl Violino's wife Katey said her husband, who was known as Sean, would be missed for his "infectious enthusiasm for life and his desire to be everyone's friend".
"He was popular with everyone he met and was loved by friends and family alike. Sean was very proud to be a member of the Armed Forces, in particular the Royal Engineers, and having been selected for promotion to Corporal had a bright future ahead of him."
"The world is a poorer place without Sean," she added.
An emergency response helicopter was sent to the scene of the blast but despite medical efforts, L/Cpl Violino, 29, from Salford, was pronounced dead on arrival at the field hospital at Camp Bastion.
He had been in Afghanistan since September 2 and is the first fatality from 36 Engineer Regiment. He joined the Army in January 2002 and had previously served in Kuwait before being promoted to Lance Corporal in October 2004.
As well as his wife, he leaves eight-year-old twins Ellie and Lewis, from a previous marriage.
Lieutenant Colonel Richard Wardlaw, Commanding Officer, 36 Engineer Regiment, said L/Cpl Violino was "the very epitome of a modern professional soldier".
