The young robbers also threatened to kill the mother during the "terrifying" robbery in the Grangetown area of Cardiff at 6.30pm on Sunday.
The two boys, armed with kitchen knives and believed to be aged between 12 and 14 years old, took £20 in cash and some American dollars from the mother after they broke into her flat.
One of the youths then stayed with her and her baby daughter as the other kicked in the door of another flat at the building on Clive Street and stole a 32in LG plasma screen television and £2,500 in cash.
Detective Sergeant Stuart Adams of South Wales Police said: "This was terrifying for the mother. It is a very unusual incident and it was horrendous.
"We are pulling out all the stops to identify the people responsible and arrest them."
The first suspect is described as being white, aged between 12 and 14 years old, with blonde hair. He was wearing a grey hooded top with red lettering, black jeans and trainers.
The second boy is white and believed to be between 12 and 14 years old. He was wearing a white hooded top with the hood up.
