Police are investigating whether Wahab Zaaki, known as "Killa", was murdered in a row between rival gang members.
He died as an ambulance rushed him to hospital after he was discovered badly injured in Walthamstow, east London, on Friday evening.
Mr Zaaki was stabbed in the chest during a confrontation near a metalworking business in Prospect Hill, Shernhall Street. It is understood the teenager, of Old Church Road, Chingford, was known to police and had a reputation for carrying knives.
His girlfriend, Lindsay Moss, 16, said he went to Walthamstow after receiving a phone call saying that someone was looking for him.
She told The Sun: "Killa was just a silly nickname. He was a very quiet person studying art."
Detectives would like to speak to anyone who may have seen a disturbance in Shernhall Street before the emergency services arrived.
Friends left flowers and cards at the scene paying tribute to the dead teenager, who was approaching his 19th birthday.
One card read: "Thinking of you on your birthday" and "To our dearest friend, you sadly missed your birthday but happy birthday bro!"
Another card said: "To our dearest friend aka Killa we're sorry for losing you, you will be sadly missed. Rip!"
