The West Ham forward, 26, was held on Wednesday over allegations he gave false details in relation to police camera footage of a car apparently speeding.
He was later freed on bail after being questioned by officers on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, police sources said.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "On June 13 a 26-year-old man was arrested at his home address on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.
"He was bailed to return to Limehouse police station on a date in July. It is alleged that he gave false details re an alleged speeding offence."
The Sun reported that Zamora, who lives in east London, allegedly asked a friend to say he was behind the car when it was caught on camera.
A source told the paper: "The allegation is he set up a pal to take the rap for him."
Earlier this month the footballer, who signed for West Ham from Spurs in 2004, helped police by appearing at a press conference over the murder of teenager Adam Regis.
The striker, who grew up in the same area where the teenager was stabbed, appealed to the public for information that could help catch his killers.
