London 2012 - Day 9 guide

Tickets for the Games go on sale on March 15. Matt Majendie guides you through the 16 days of competition and 26 sports that will make up the greatest show on earth. Today the spotlight is on tennis and weightlifting where we have high medal hopes...

Tennis

Where to watch it: Wimbledon.

When to watch it: July 28-August 5.

How the scoring works: the men's and women's follow the same format in both the singles and doubles with all contests being a best of three sets, except for the men's singles final, which is the best of five, and the mixed doubles, which will be decided by a first-to-10 tiebreak if a deciding set is required.

How many matches to win a medal: there are six rounds in the singles and five in the doubles.

The star of the sport: Rafael Nadal is the Olympic champion and will take a lot of beating if he stays fit.

Do the Brits have a medal chance? All eyes will be on Andy Murray. The Scotsman is a strong medal contender and is also set to team up with older brother Jamie in the doubles.

Did you know? the word tennis originates from the French word tenez, which literally translates as "here you are" and was what players used to shout at each other before serving.

Ticket prices: £20 to £225

Weightlifting

Also on day nine: weightlifting.

Where to watch it: ExCeL.

When to watch it: July 28- August 1 & August 3-7.

How the scoring works: each weight division has two types of lift - the snatch and the clean and jerk. The competitor to lift the most combined weight wins gold. In the event of a tie, the lighter weightlifter will win.

How many matches to win a medal: lifters are allowed three attempts at every weight. First up is the snatch where competitors have to lift the bar over the head in one fluid movement. The clean and jerk involves a lift to the shoulders before a further lift over the head.

The star of the sport: Behdad Salimi - the Iranian was named the heavyweight lifter of the year last season after a gold and two silvers. He is very much the big man of the sport in the +105kg category.

Do the Brits have a medal chance? Zoe Smith is the best bet for a medal in the 58kg category after winning bronze at last year's Commonwealth Games.

Did you know? three-time Olympic champion Naim Suleymanoglu, from Turkey, in the 60kg category could lift three times his bodyweight in the clean and jerk.

Ticket prices: £20 to £175
