No place for Libyan leader or his son at the London Games

The Government today insisted that Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi would be banned from attending next year's Olympics despite the country being granted almost 1,000 tickets to the Games.

The Libyan Olympic committee, headed by Col Gaddafi's eldest son, has successfully requested the tickets, most of which will go to athletes, coaches and officials.

But ministers said today that senior figures from the Libyan regime would not be attending the Games as most of them, including Col Gaddafi and his son Muhammad, were subject to a European Union travel ban.

A government spokesman said: "Gaddafi, his son and key figures in the current Libyan government are banned from entering the EU and will not be coming to the Olympic Games.

"As with all National Organising Committees, the Libyan NOC, not an individual, has been allocated a few hundred tickets which they are responsible for distributing to sports organisations and athletes within their country."

Games organiser Locog is obliged to allocate tickets to all 200-plus competing nations.
