Duty calls: diver's soldier boyfriend will miss medal bid
15 February 2012
Team GB diver Tonia Couch today revealed that her Royal Marine boyfriend is serving in Afghanistan so he cannot be poolside to cheer her on as she goes for gold in London.
Karl Thurgood, 23, on his third tour of the war-torn country, hopes to be back for part of the Games but has no tickets because he is not sure of the date of his return from Lashkar Gar.
Couch, also 23, turned in the best performance by a British woman diver in 20 years at the World Championships in 2009, when she came eighth in the individual event.
At the Beijing Games the year before, she finished eighth in the 10-metre individual and synchronised events.
She and synchronised diving partner Sarah Barrow, now training in Southend with the rest of the team, narrowly missed out on bronze at the World Championships in July.
Couch, who met her boyfriend in her home town of Plymouth when they were 16, said: "I worry about him and miss him but he's very supportive of my sport."
