'Elegant mash-up' of Adele and Elgar to close Games
23 February 2012
The Olympic closing ceremony will feature an "elegant mash-up of British music" from Elgar to Adele, it was revealed today.
In front of a global TV audience of 750 million viewers, the Games will sign off on Sunday, August 12 with a stadium showcase that will also incorporate top names in British fashion and design.
Games chiefs unveiled information about the show, entitled A Symphony of British Music, which they hope with generate a wave of patriotism. They did not confirm which acts would be booked, but all will perform free. The show, from 9pm to 11.30pm, will feature live and recorded elements.
The Locog team will have only 17 hours to transform the venue from an athletics stadium into a performance space. The show will also incorporate the Isles of Wonder theme from the opening ceremony, an eight-minute section from Rio de Janeiro - likely to have a carnival theme - and closing ceremony protocol.
Director Kim Gavin, producer of Take That's Circus Tour, said the show would be "an elegant mash-up of British music" featuring all-British music and all-British acts. It would be "an absolute melting pot of British creativity", he added.
Executive producer Stephen Daldry said: "It is one of the most exciting things I've ever seen. If the opening ceremony is the largest television event on earth, then the second largest is the closing ceremony. It's also going to be [a] celebration of the artists and celebration of the volunteers."
Meanwhile Hyde Park will host a "best of British" night with Blur, The Specials and New Order taking to the stage.
The closing night will feature more than 4,100 performers, including 380 children from the Olympic boroughs, Some 10,500 athletes will also attend. The orchestral soundtrack will be recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.
