London children will train with top US athletes
07 February 2012
Schoolchildren from Tower Hamlets will train with top US athletes at the American team's high-security training base as part of an Olympics legacy deal.
The pupils will get the chance as a "thank you" for the team taking over the Mile End Stadium during the Games, and will be able to watch the training sessions of track and field stars, such as sprinters Tyson Gay and Allyson Felix and 400m runner Jeremy Wariner.
The US Olympic committee settled on the stadium at Mile End Park leisure centre because of its proximity to the Olympic Park, and because of the scope of investment opportunities their choice could bring to the area.
As well the coaching clinics, the committee is contributing a six-figure sum to resurface the 20-year-old running track, pole vault and high jump areas and improving the throwing circles for discus and shot put.
Security preparations for the team of about 150 athletes, plus support staff, have been huge. The US Secret Service, Special Branch, and the Met's CO19 firearms unit have all been involved, and there has been 3D digital satellite imaging of the site.
Local schoolboy and aspiring 100m hurdler Mustafa Aden, 14, from Bow School, said of the US team: "They have travelled a long way to inform us about how we can improve and give us ideas and hope - it's inspiring. It's amazing to think all the athletes are going to be on my doorstep."
Gay's coach Jon Drummond told an event for pupils at the stadium today: "This is going to be home, and our athletes will really enjoy being here."
Heather Bonfield, head of culture, learning and leisure at Tower Hamlets council, said: "The kind of opportunity they will give us in coaching our young athletes is incredible and their investment in the stadium will give us a great Olympic legacy."
