Park illegally during Games and you could be fined £1,000

A London borough is proposing a £1,000 fine - double the upper limit for the rest of the capital - for motorists who park illegally during the Olympics.

Greenwich council is seeking permission to introduce the record deterrent charges of £500-£1,000 as it faces severe road congestion during the Games.

The highest fines will be reserved for operationally critical routes such as areas around Greenwich Park, which will host the Olympic equestrian event.

Proposals have been put to umbrella group London Councils, which will decide this month on a uniform set of parking charges during the Olympics for all councils.

However, individual boroughs may be able to set higher rates subject to approval by the Mayor and Transport Secretary.

Boroughs hosting Olympic events have supported an increase above the £200 fines proposed for violations along the 106-mile Olympic road network. Some councils think it is necessary to raise charges to £500 if it is to be a sufficient deterrent.

Extra charges for towing away are proposed by Hackney (£350) and Newham (£380-£400) on top of the £200 penalty charge.

A Greenwich council spokesman said: "We are intending to consult people on this later this month at a public exhibition on a range of Olympic- related transport issues.

"The level of parking charges is one aspect of this. We shall be consulting on the initial London Councils proposal of £200, which is suggested for the whole of London.

"We do have particular concerns that this may be insufficient to deter people from driving to the Games venue in Greenwich town centre. Were this to be the case, there are fears that businesses in the Greenwich area could suffer if regular customers are unable to park." London Councils guidance states: "It would be difficult, though not impossible, to justify a temporary increase across one borough in isolation."
