Superyachts 'force out disabled sailors'

Superyachts could displace a sailing centre for people with disabilities if plans to build a temporary marina during next year's Olympics are approved.
A planning application for 350 temporary moorings in Greenland Dock has been submitted to Southwark council. Boat owners will pay up to £1,300 for six nights, generating up to £200,000 for the council. The marina will be in use from July 23 to August 15, although locals have been told to expect six weeks of disruption.
The dock in Rotherhithe is home to Tideway Sailability Centre, a charity which trains sailors with disabilities. Anthony Eaves, Commodore of the centre, said the marina plans will obstruct the walkway used to push wheelchairs onto boats. He said: "We are being denied this once in a lifetime opportunity to participate in our sport during the Olympics.
One of the sailors at the centre is Melvin Kinnear, who won gold in the Access World Championships last year. Mr Kinnear, 52, said: "It comes in the heart of our sailing season and we had all sorts of plans lined up for that time."
Councillor Barrie Hargrove, of Southwark's ruling Labour group, said the income from the marina would help offset the £400,000 costs the council will incur during the Olympics, such as for street cleaning. He added: "We hope, if at all possible, to put some money back into dock improvements, such as new toilet facilities."
