Team GB stars: We've come to garden centre for some fencing
02 February 2012
Fencers Ben Peggs and Marcus Mepstead compete in the unlikely setting of a garden centre.
The Team GB Olympic hopefuls duelled among the plants to promote a £1 million, five-year sponsorship deal with British Fencing's sponsor, insurance firm Beazley.
Peggs and Mepstead fought among the sword-shaped plants at a Hillier Nurseries centre in Romsey, Hampshire, which will create a fencing-related display for the insurers at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.
The exhibits will include various "spiky plants and foliage", said a spokesman for the garden centre, including phormiums, cordylines and astelias.
Plants and sculptures will be chosen for the show, which starts on May 22, to create "lance and sword-like" effects and leading fencers will give more demonstrations among the greenery.
Hillier Nurseries won a 66th consecutive Chelsea Gold medal last May, the longest unbroken run of medals in the history of the show. Peggs was the men's junior Commonwealth individual and team foil fencing champion in 2009.
