The Evening Standard's Cathy Wood speaks to track cyclist Ross Edgar...
Ross Edgar
Age: 29
From: Newmarket
Weight: 72kg
Height: 169cm
Motto: Keep on trying and you will get there in the end.
Medals: Olympic Games Beijing 2008 (Silver), Keirin World Track Championships Manchester 2008 (Silver), Team Sprint World Track Championships Majorca 2007 (Silver), Team Sprint Keirin Commonwealth Games, Melbourne 2006 (Gold, Silver and Bronze)
Training: I train every day except Sunday. On Tuesdays and Fridays we do two sessions: track and gym; Mondays and Thursdays are track only days and Wednesday and Saturday are spent doing road rides. Everything I do is specific to my event so, for example, when I do squats in the gym the weight is very heavy but the number of repetitions low.
Diet and food: I eat three main meals with snacks in between. All meals are delivered by a nutrition company and contain exactly the protein, veg and carbohydrate I need. As they are already partly cooked it's really easy. I quite like cooking but you spend a lot of time on your feet and this way I maximise my recovery from sessions, which is ideal for me.
Drinks: Within 20 minutes of every training session, we have protein shakes containing supplements. I also drink lots of Gatorade.
Treats: Occasionally I'll have some Cadbury Caramel Nibbles. I'd probably only eat about a quarter of a bag, though.
Beauty: I let the beauty happen. My girlfriend, Kelly, and I were in Selfridges last week and I was given some free Armani moisturisers. Kelly found it really funny as I never normally use moisturiser but I quite liked it. I don't know if I'm old enough to use moisturiser yet.
Hair: I normally use shower gel and sometimes some sculpting clay.
Shaving: If I do shave it's a wet one. I've been using trimmers to get a bit of designer stubble but not that often.
Spa treatments: I once went for a back wax and never again. It was far too painful. I don't believe anyone has to go through that much pain. I'm pretty hairy, though.
Bad habits: I leave the kitchen cupboard doors open. Kelly's always having a go at me but I don't pay too much attention.
Favourite body part: Legs. I do so much work on them.
Least favourite: Nose, it's big.
Sex and the Olympics: They always say millions of condoms are taken. I think there are a lot more people taking them than using them.
Other sports: Socially I play a bit of golf in the off-season to relax. I used to be a fairly decent runner at school but I've been doing cycling since I was 16 so there's not much time for anything else.
Passion: Decent coffee. When we were in Perth, Australia, before Christmas in a training camp Chris Hoy persuaded Jason Kenny (also part of the Team Sprint) and me to do a Barista course. It was excellent and we learned how to make a perfect coffee. There's a lot that goes into a really nice cup of coffee.
