Wanted: somewhere to plant one million trees for 2012 Games

A campaign to plant one million trees in time for the 2012 Olympics is being hampered by a lack of suitable woodland sites in London and the loss of more than 9,000 trees last year.

Trees for Cities remains "confident" it will meet the deadline but needs new plots of one hectare and larger, similar to Hanworth Park in Hounslow and Thames Chase community forest in Upminster.

The charity's Million Trees Campaign is almost halfway complete, with 460,000 trees planted, including oak and hazel in woodlands and silver birch and London plane in the streets. The scheme is backed by councils, charities and voluntary organisations.

They planted 36,700 trees last year but 9,200 were felled due to disease, development, subsidence problems and health and safety complaints.

Graham Simmonds, of Trees for Cities, said: "It is sad to see that so many of the trees lost were mature trees as they are such an important part of London's landscape."

He urged councils to fell trees only as a last resort, adding: "We should just be able to reach one million trees by upping our planting rate."
